Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother first saw what was then Barrogill Castle in 1952, while mourning the death of her husband, King George VI. Falling for its isolated charm and hearing it was to be abandoned, she decided to save it and today it is a lasting tribute to her commitment to the local community. The Castle of Mey was the property of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother from 1952 until 1996, when Her Majesty generously gifted it with an endowment to the Trust. The castle is situated on the north coast of Caithness, about 15 miles east of Thurso and six miles west of John O’Groats. It stands on rising ground about 400 yards from the seashore, overlooking the Pentland Firth and the Orkney Islands.

The Castle & Gardens of Mey is open as a visitor attraction from May to September, opening times vary so please check our website for more details. With a beautiful walled garden, woodland, animal centre, tearoom and gift shop – there is something for everyone at the Castle & Gardens of Mey.

We would like to welcome you to the Castle & Gardens of Mey on Saturday 6th May to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The Gardens and Grounds will be free of charge on this day.
A group photo will be taken in front of the Castle of Mey at 3pm – join us to commemorate the special occasion! 📸
